After failing to further get the "truth" out of Rapunzel, Gothel soon found her dressed up for a party (Stefan's 18th birthday party) and found that Rapunzel had painted using her magic paintbrush (initially the silver hairbrush transformed).

When she left on Hugo, she warned Rapunzel it would worsen if she wouldn't say the young man's name.ĭuring a visit to the village, Gothel saw the aftermath of one of Wilhelm's several acts of destruction against Frederick's kingdom (the fact that they were destroying each other, she was pleased about). Although Rapunzel attempted to state that she honestly didn't know it (which was correct), Gothel refused to believe this and destroyed Rapunzel's paintings and brushes while transforming Rapunzel's room into a tall tower without exits in an attempt to get the truth out of her. After Otto told Gothel everything about Rapunzel's trip, Gothel appeared in Rapunzel's room and asked her the name of the young man that Rapunzel met (who unknown to Rapunzel was actually Frederick's son, Prince Stefan). Rapunzel soon discovered a secret tunnel under the basement and went to Frederick's village, where she was saved by a young man whom she fell for.

At that moment, Gothel called for Rapunzel. While Rapunzel was once doing Gothel's tea, she accidentally discovered a basement filled with many things from Gothel's past in the basement invitations for all the many balls Gothel went to, a painting of Gothel and Wilhelm (the latter of who's face was torn) and a silver hairbrush given to Rapunzel from her biological parents on her first birthday. She also gained the service of a ferret named Otto and a dragon named Hugo (who's daughter Penelope is friends with Rapunzel). Gothel made Rapunzel her own servant to keep the manor in perfect order (including doing a lot of chores in and outside of the manor and also made Rapunzel serve her tea (all the while claiming that she had found Rapunzel abandoned at only a few days old). Unfortunately, he didn't reciprocate her feelings which led to her planning revenge on him after finding out that he'd married, become king and had a baby daughter called Rapunzel, Gothel kidnapped Wilhelm's infant child and put her in her manor hidden in the dark woods behind a magic wall (while somehow making Wilhelm think the theft had been carried out by his neighboring kingdom's ruler, King Frederick, setting the two at each other's throats for years).

At one of them, she met a man called Wilhelm whom she gained a romantic attraction for (and even danced with him). In her youth, Gothel was invited to several balls.
